How do I inspect virtual machines, disk usage and RAID status?

Virtual machines and Storage are infrastructure views. Machine power controls affect the services inside that machine; disk and RAID information describes a different layer from a single website's storage figure.

Before you start

You need the relevant infrastructure-reading capability. Machine power changes require administration permission and authority for all affected hosted workloads.

What to do

  1. Open Virtual machines and identify the intended machine. Inspect its name, address, running state, CPU, memory and autostart information.
  2. For an authorised power change, use Start or review the Restart or Shutdown confirmation. Enter the exact machine name when requested and account for the services that will be interrupted.
  3. Read the operation result, refresh the machine state and check the affected hosted applications through their ordinary addresses.
  4. Open Storage to inspect block devices, their hierarchy, capacity, filesystem and mount points. Compare Filesystem usage and RAID status when investigating space or health concerns.
  5. Retain the relevant time and redacted result for the infrastructure administrator. A storage display is evidence to investigate, not an instruction to format, delete or rebuild a device.

What happens next

You can distinguish machine availability, allocated resources, filesystem usage and RAID health. A running machine does not alone prove that all hosted applications are healthy.

If something goes wrong

Check the exact machine and units before interpreting an apparent resource discrepancy. Do not reboot a shared machine to address an unverified website fault or assume a disk can be removed from a label alone. If power state is uncertain, inspect Operations and current state before repeating it; escalate storage or RAID concerns with the observed evidence.
